British Prime Minister announces first AI and Data Grand Challenge

June 06, 2018

On 21 May 2018, British Prime Minister, Theresa May, announced the first AI and Data grand challenge mission: to use data, Artificial intelligence and innovation to transform the prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of chronic diseases by 2030.

This mission aspires to put the UK at the forefront of AI in early diagnosis, innovation, prevention and treatment. In the government’s view a successful mission would save lives and increase NHS efficiency by enabling earlier diagnosis and reducing the need for costly late stage treatment. According to Cancer Research UK investing in an early diagnosis research platform with AI data could result in over 56,000 more people annually having cancers diagnosed at an early rather than late stage within 15 years. That in turn could result in 22,000 fewer deaths within five years of diagnosis compared to today.

The AI and Data Grand Challenge is one of four Grand Challenges that form part of the UK’s Industrial Strategy. The Industrial Strategy aims to put the UK at the forefront of the industries of the future, so that the UK is well placed to take advantage of major global changes, improving people’s lives and the country’s productivity.  The government recognises that Artificial Intelligence and machine learning are already starting to transform the global economy.

The UK already has a leading position in the use of AI in healthcare. Google’s DeepMind division has several ongoing projects with UK hospitals on mobile tools and AI research to help get patients from test to treatment as quickly and accurately as possible. Meanwhile University College London Hospital has recently announced a new partnership with The Alan Turing Institute to explore how artificial intelligence (AI) can support clinical decision making.
