For many years, the immersive three-dimensional digital world has been left to the cinematic experience. However, the emergence of the metaverse presents an opportunity to translate everyday activities – working, attending a concert, travelling, shopping, socializing – into a parallel digital universe.

The announcement on 14 January 2022 of a proposed competition collective action against Meta (formerly Facebook) is the latest in a number of collective actions against the tech giants, including Apple and Google, and is of particular interest owing to the subject matter – namely data collection practices.

Open source software and components can provide useful building blocks to reduce development time and effort.
