Revised Colorado AI law signed by Governor
Colorado just rewrote its own artificial intelligence (AI) regulation, affecting every company developing or deploying AI in a way that may touch a Colorado resident.
After a lawsuit from X.AI and a suspended enforcement period, the Colorado General Assembly repealed and replaced its original AI governance law. The Governor signed that new bill into law on May 14, 2026, with an effective date of January 1, 2027. The new law replaces the prior law’s “high-risk AI systems” framework. In its place is a new regime targeting “automated decision-making technology” used in consequential decisions (like in employment, housing, healthcare, and financial services) with distinct obligations for developers and deployers alike. New consumer rights, including the right to a “meaningful human review” following an adverse outcome, also change the compliance requirements.
